AGS
The The AGS is a true 2-pedal automated transmission created to make driving easier and
more efficient. Now, even the most inexperienced driver will be at ease and can
drive safely, confidently and at a lower operating cost.
- Top gear ratio: .73 Over drive
- Up to 660 lb-ft Torque
- Up to 60,000 lbs GCW
- Overall 9.20Ratio
The Automated Gearshift technology gives the driver the choice of forgetting
about the gear shift lever to focus on more important things like the traffic
on the road. The new technology provides drivers a smoother experience, an easy
two- pedal operation and automated or manual shifting options. Owners will find
it easy to train and retain drivers since the AGS makes it easy to operate the
vehicle without special training or experience.
Easy Two-Pedal Operation
The AGS Automated Gear Shift is a fully automated transmission. The clutch is
automatically actuated by a hydraulic system that is integral to the
transmission. No clutch pedal is needed to operate the vehicle—not even at
start and stop. That means an uncrowded floorboard and reduced noise inside the
truck.
Manual or Automated Mode
With the SmartShift® lever, the driver can choose if he would like
to drive in the automated or in manual mode. The easy operation system of the
SmartShift® Lever allows extra control behind the wheel.
Driving in the automated mode means that the AGS changes gears at optimal shift
points. Still, the driver can choose at any time to switch to manual
mode, by simply pushing a switch on the Shift Lever.
Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
The transmission control Unit (TCU) can direct all forward shifts in response
to current driving conditions and the driver's pressure on the brake and
throttle. The current gear is displayed on the right-hand control panel as
shown in Figure 1.
The TCU is the brain that makes the AGS so efficient. It smoothly lets the AGS
change gears at optimal times by sensing truck weight, uphill or downhill
grades, curves and even slippery road conditions. The TCU precisely determines
shift points for optimum performance and fuel economy. Also, no matter how hard
the driver tries, he can't make a gear selection that will damage the
transmission. This eliminates driveline abuse and extends the life of the
transmission and clutch.
Smooth Shifting and Clutching
The TCU controls the automated clutch actuator, which provides a smoother
engagement than a traditional clutch pedal. Through its optimized shifting, the
TCU always selects the perfect engine RPM for the best shift possible.
Clutch actuation
With sophisticated and automated hydraulic clutch actuation, you get smoother
clutching as well as increased clutch and powertrain life—not to mention lower
overall operational costs.
Durability
The AGS is based on the long-proven Mercedes-Benz 6-speed manual transmission,
built with components like heat-treated steel alloy gears, sealed bearings for
long life, and parts which require virtually no maintenance. Plus, every single
Mercedes-Benz transmission is checked for optimal performance before it leaves
the factory.
Startability
The startability of the Manual transmission is 17 or higher.
